A Guide To Swimming at Shinjuku Sports Center

Shinjuku Sports Center is in the middle of Toyama Park ( Not to be confused with Shinjuku Cosmic Center) I had a little trouble finding the entrance but there is a convenience store on one side of the building then a bike park, and the entrance is just around the corner.
The closest stations are Nishi-Waseda and Takadanobaba. It is about 5 minutes from Nishi-Waseda and 15 minutes from Takadanobaba.

Once you enter the building there is a small shop in the hall then an information counter with a ticket machine next to it. You can ask the staff for help, they speak English.

The tickets cost 400 Yen and allows you to use the facilities for 2 hours 30 minutes. You show the ticket to the attendant and then keep it for your exit.

Then you go to the changing rooms, men on the left, women on the right. Take off your shoes before entering. There are specific shoe lockers at the changing room entrance or you can carry your shoes through and put them in a locker with the rest of your belongings. The lockers cost 100 Yen and you get it back once you've unlocked the locker.

Try and keep your socks on for as long as possible because these are the most painful floor mats I have ever stood on! It is almost unbearable!!

The changing rooms are quite small but there are plenty of lockers. On the way to the pool there are showers and toilets. You must wear a swimsuit, swimming hat and goggles.

Once you have exited the changing rooms you will first see a small children's pool before you get to the main pool. ( Other way around if you are coming out of the men's changing rooms) The main pool is 25m and has 8 lanes. 3 lanes are used for walking and 4 for swimming although sometimes there are lessons in one or two of the lanes. 2 lanes are swimming one way and 3 are for swimming up and down.

There is a shelf where you can leave your towel. You cannot take a bottle of water on to the poolside, it must remain on the shelf with your towel. There are kick boards and pull buoys for use.

There is a break every hour for 5 minutes at 55 past. You must exit the pool and sit on one of the benches.

After your swim, you can use the showers but no shampoo or body wash is allowed. There are sinks in the changing rooms and one hairdryer attached to the wall that you can stand under as well as one plugged in that you can pick up.

Once you exit the changing room, you simply hand over your ticket to exit.

This is another nice facility to use and is often quiet allowing for a proper swim. The surrounding area is also nice due to it being in the middle of a park. There is a small shopping center nearby and several coffee shops and restaurants near the station as it is within a University area.
